Above and Beneath (1)

£12 H: 30cm / W: 21cm

I did this drawing in fixed soft pastel on high quality paper. It's an attempt at cubism and abstract conceptions of the three realms of heaven, Earth and hell, though I've tried to avoid culture-specific symbolism. It's interesting because a caveman would probably understand it. Framed original.

About
I am interested in producing art that reflects different mental states, for instance those associated with psychosis or "split" thinking. I perceive the world as being at war, only the people who fight for good are distributed throughout every demographic and so the only way to know you are on the right side is to pray to God. We tend to pigeonhole people into good and bad, and use signs and symbols to connote this, but the true reality is not one of signs and symbols but of direct experience. We could therefore say that most of our experience is divorced from the true reality to some extent, as we impose upon it symbolic meaning. One of the functions of art, where such functions exist, is to deconstruct the pseudo-spirituality of symbolism and train the mind to pass over such things and see things as they are. The truth is often stranger, though simpler, than fiction.
